CARY, N.C. – MAY 17, 2021
Santa Clara claimed the 2020 College Cup championship after a tense, hard-fought national title match that ended 1–1 through regulation and overtime. The Broncos rallied late in the second half to equalize with a goal from Kelsey Turnbow, then held firm through extra time as both teams battled for a winner that never came.
In the deciding penalty shootout, Santa Clara was flawless. Julie Doyle set the tone by burying the first attempt, giving the Broncos a 1–0 lead and handing Florida State its first conceded opening-round penalty of the tournament. From there, the Seminoles were forced to chase. Clara Robbins and Emily Madril both struck the right post, while Sally Menti doubled Santa Clara’s advantage. Kelsey Turnbow followed with the Broncos’ third conversion, and Izzy D’Aquila delivered the final blow with a composed finish into the lower-right corner to secure the title.
Competing in their third national championship match and first since 2002, Santa Clara converted all four of its penalties. Bronco Captain, Julie Doyle was named to the 2020 NCAA College Cup All-Tournament Team for her standout play throughout the tournament.
